Imagine an assistance dog organization that focuses on
providing training, education, and support all in one package!
This was the dream Robin Pool had when she founded Paws-
Up, Inc. in 1998. After years of working with her own service
dog, Robin realized the impact an assistance dog had on those
who need them and was determined to develop an organization
that would enhance independence through the partnership with
an assistance or professional therapy dog.
Paws-Up Inc., located in the Derby, Kansas, area offers three
distinct programs that provide an individual with an opportunity
to acquire an assistance or professional therapy dog in a way
that best meets his/her needs. Paws-Up Inc.’s canine training
philosophy emphasizes positive reinforcement techniques.
Students are taught clicker training and other forms of positive
reinforcement throughout our programs. Our dogs are donated by
breeders, adopted from breed rescue groups and animal
shelters. In addition to working with a variety of breeds,
Paws-Up Inc. has trained assistance
dogs to help handlers with a with a wide range of disabilities including mobility, hearing, seizure,
and psychiatric. Paws-Up’s professional therapy dog program is designed specifically to
enhance the work of health care or human services professionals in many settings such as
schools and hospitals.
Recently, Paws-Up Inc. has increased its educational services by producing an internationally
subscribed newsletter, a free Etiquette for Assistance Dog Handlers Workbook, providing
presentations at local events, assisting other organizations in their development of programs such
as Read to Rover and Pet Visitation and speaking at national dog training seminars. Paws-Up
hopes these various outreach services will promote education of the benefits of assistance,
therapy dogs, and the use of positive training techniques for these dogs.
Volunteers, with and without disabilities, are
heavily relied upon at Paws-Up Inc. in all aspects
of the training, education, and support. Without
these dedicated volunteers, Paws-Up’s programs
would not exist. Funding for our programs comes
from various avenues of private donations,
community grants, in-kind donations, educational
material and a variety of canine training services
offered to the general public. Paws-Up is a
member of Assistance Dog International and
follows the minimum standards of training for all
dogs trained within our Owner Trained Programs. Paw-Up is also a proud member of the Delta
Society.
