Submission Guidelines for A Pawsitive Canine Experience
Thank you for your interest in the newsletter, A Pawsitive Canine Experience.
Please note that this is an all-volunteer publication, therefore authors cannot be financially compensated. We greatly appreciate our
authors’ generosity in sharing their time and their expertise.
Article Topics
We are looking for articles from writers with professional expertise in the following:
We ask that authors only contribute original articles that have not been published elsewhere and are not being considered for
publication elsewhere. Authors interested in contributing are encouraged to submit a query as described in the Submission
Requirements section below.
Submissions may relate to one of the following topics:
Submission Requirements
As issues are planned many months in advance, please note that submissions may take up to eight months or longer before being
printed. Articles are published on a space-available basis. All articles will be edited, and decisions made by the editorial staff are final.
Our managing editor will respond as promptly as she can to your inquiry and give you details regarding deadlines and word count
requirements if accepted.
Our focus is on teams that use positive training methods, such as clicker training; therefore, articles focusing on other training
methods will not be featured. We use the same guidelines in selecting programs and teams to feature.
If you are submitting an article: Please send a query by email to: Veronica Sanchez, Managing Editor at merlecollie@hotmail.com
including: your name, a summary of your background, education and relevant experience, information about the article topic you wish
to write, and attach a writing sample.
If you are interested in being featured in Meet a Team: You do not need to attach a writing sample, but please provide
information about the type of tasks your assistance dog does for you and the training method(s) used to train the dog. A picture may
also be submitted. If you are selected for Meet a Team, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that will be edited by our staff
for publication.

- Assistance or therapy dog training using positive methods, or
- Licensed human healthcare – professionals in these fields, such as physical therapists or nurses.
We ask that authors only contribute original articles that have not been published elsewhere and are not being considered for
publication elsewhere. Authors interested in contributing are encouraged to submit a query as described in the Submission
Requirements section below.
Submissions may relate to one of the following topics:
- Training/Instructional: For example, how to clicker train a particular trick or behavior needed for assistance dog.
- Educational: Information about assistance and therapy dog’s role in healthcare, or information about caring for an assistance
or therapy dog. - Operant Conditioning or Classical Conditioning: Detailed articles about technical aspects of animal training (using humane
methods). - Informational: Review of books, products, resources available for assistance dog training.
- Meet A Team: We only feature one “inspirational” piece per issue featuring an assistance dog team. (Separate submission
requirements for Meet a Team are described in further detail below.) Teams are selected based on our goal to give a balanced
perspective to our readers of various kinds of assistance dogs.
