Our Mission

Paws-Up, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that promotes the use of non-aversive training
methods and a positive relationship between humans and dogs has expanded our services as an
affiliate program of Delta Society® which enables pet owner volunteers to provide services to
people in their own communities while spending quality time with their pets.

Pet Partners® Program

Delta Society's® Pet Partners® Program trains and evaluates volunteers and their pets for visiting
animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.

The therapeutic use of pets in the areas of Animal Assisted Animals (AAA) and Animal Assisted
Therapy (AAT) has gained increasing attention in recent years.  Pets provide constant source of
comfort, promote positive health benefits, bring out our nurturing instinct and make us feel safe
and unconditionally loved.

What is the Difference between Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal-Assisted
Therapy (AAT)?

  • Animal-assisted activities (AAA) provide opportunities for motivational, educational
and/or recreational benefits to enhance a person’s quality of life.  AAA are delivered by a
professional, para-professional or volunteer who demonstrates knowledge about animals
and the human populations with which they interact.  As an example of AAA – an
individual brings their dog to a long-term care facility to visit the residents. Although the
staff is involved in the visits, no treatment goals have been set for the visit. Aside from
signing in and out, no records are kept.

  • Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal is
incorporated as an integral part of the clinical healthcare treatment process.  AAT is
delivered or directed by a professional health or human service provider who demonstrates
skill and expertise regarding the clinical applications of human-animal interactions.

  • Therapy animals are usually the personal pets of the handlers and accompany their
handlers to the sites they visit.  Therapy animals are usually not service animals. Federal
law does not currently provide for them to enter public places that have a “no pets” policy.

Could My Pet become a Paws-Up Pet Partner?

Yes if your pet is friendly, easy to maintain and has a reliable and predictable temperament. The
Paws-Up Pet Partners program is unique in that we look at both ends of the leash, you too must
demonstrate that you have the skills to work well with your pet, the people you will visit with and
the facilities that you will serve.

What Types of Pets Can Become a Paws-Up Pet Partner?

Delta Society registers domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, horses, miniature
pigs, birds etc.

Are Paws-Up Pet Partners Given Public Access as Service Animals?

Many people are under the mistaken impression that therapy animals and their handlers have the
same rights of access as people with disabilities and their service animals. In some cases, people
have their animals evaluated and registered as therapy animals with the intention of insisting on
access to public spaces with their animals, as if the animal were a service animal. They may be
trying to have their animals accompany them on airplanes, in stores, or in restaurants that have
"no pets/animals" policies. Essentially, this is fraudulent and, in many areas, illegal. Unless the
handler meets the definition of a person with a disability and the animal meets the definition of a
service animal, the team has no more rights of access than a person with a companion animal or
pet.

Does the Pet Partners Program Provide Volunteer Insurance?

When acting as a volunteer for Delta Society (“Delta”) within the scope of your duties as a Paws-
Up Pet Partners volunteer, you and your pet are insured by Delta’s commercial general liability
insurance.  That means that if either member of a Team causes a loss at a location where the
Team is visiting, and that loss results in a claim for which Delta is liable, Delta’s commercial
general liability insurance will defend and pay expenses of the claim.
