Penny Pratt BA - Rescue Dog
Placement Coordinator
Penny began working with rescued dogs as a youth in
her father's kennel of pedigreed hunting dogs. Penny
found that by going to the shelter and seeking out
proper mixes, she was able to find dogs that met the
special needs of specific hunters. She trained and
placed many rescued hunter dogs with local hunters
wanting her dogs.
Currently, Penny is the Vice President of the
Heartland Pet Connection the local Humane Society
in Hastings, Nebraska. For the past three years she
has been the Education Chairman for this non-profit
organization and responsible for the design,
implementation and assessment of the dog teams
participating of all of the following Heartland Pet
Connection's educational programs. Penny personally
has five dogs that are involved in these programs.
The Zone Project: is an after school program for "at
risk" youth that uses pre-trained dogs to teach
students the skill of basic obedience training. After
graduation from this program, the students help to
socialize and ready shelter dogs for adoption.
Safety Assemblies: Dog/handler teams present animal safety and care demonstrations to schools,
civic groups, day care centers and all other interested groups.
Read to Rover: Dog teams go into schools and the library to help students with their reading. The
team sits quietly and listens while individual students read to the dog.
WAGS Brigade: These are students that have graduated from The Zone Program and wish to do
community service work at the Hastings Animal Shelter.
